I began hunting for whatever evil inside me that made me unworthy of God's help; a psychologically destructive obsession that lasted 22 more YEARS.

I was 35 when I finally confided in my dad and learned the real secret behind the strange, heartbreaking habit that plagued my self-worth for as long as I could remember . . .

My father looked at me in dismay.
"I thought that curse ended. I had no idea 
it was passed down to you kids."
"That's ridiculous, dad. I mean, sure, it feels like a curse, but it's not like an . . . actual curse. It's just a really bad habit."

He explained how his mom and her sisters blamed their bad habits on a family curse, and how she had the same habit of biting her lip until it was raw. 
This was the first time it ever 
occurred to me my bad habit 
might not be a symptom of 
my own moral failing.
"I never told you kids because I thought my mom and aunts were crazy. I don't believe in curses and didn't want to plant the idea in your heads. But now it's showing up in you kids the same way. I just never put it all together until now."

I sat there stunned--first that my dad never mentioned this curse before. And second, more importantly, that this emotionally devastating habit might have nothing to do with me "being unworthy."

A Wave Of Relief Flooded Over Me.

And maybe I was more worthy 
than I'd ever allowed myself to believe!

I kept thinking how much this curse had cost me in self-confidence and lost opportunities. But even worse, how it might show up in my kids, and what it would COST THEM if I didn't do something about it fast.

With fresh hope and a new perspective, I again applied myself to earnest prayer. This was 2008.
At first nothing happened. But after a few weeks in prayer, ideas from outside me began flowing into my mind; tools I should gather, healing rituals I could perform. 

These ideas were nothing like what my church leaders taught. But knowing I'd done everything in my power to be worthy of grace, I took my inspirations on faith and started gathering the tools and performing the healing rituals.

Mysterious Ways Indeed . . .

Soon after, I stumbled upon the Llewellyn's 2009 Witchs' Datebook in the bookstore. I'd always been attracted to these eye-catching calendars but resisted the temptation to go near them.

But this time was somehow different. I walked straight to it, picked it up, and let it drop open in my hand. Right before me was a complete list of the tools I'd been inspired to gather. 

A Shiver Ran Through My

Even though I was shocked, AND knowing witchcraft and magic were strictly forbidden in my religion, I didn't drop the calendar. 

In fact, I promptly PURCHASED IT!

Because by this time I was desperate. And there were too many "coincidences" that I wasn't about to shun them. They were coming to me through prayer and sincere desire to overcome something unhealthy on behalf of my entire family, and I wasn't about to put on the brakes.

Was there something I had missed? So I scoured my journal for any hint at a process I could repeat to help me with my other problems/habits.

Ironically it was only partly what I wrote that revealed the secret. The other part was something I accidentally put on the page.

It was my own oily thumbprint.

Essential oils were becoming popular, and a friend gave me a small set for my birthday. I threw some together willy-nilly into a blend I was in love with and had been wearing for months.  

At first I was mad at myself for soiling my beautiful journal. But then it occurred to me:
